How to film a 30-second Reel to the beat
A good beat-cut Reel is planned before it is filmed: 12–16 shots of 1–4 beats each, alternating details and wide views, with the strongest image on the drop — the moment the music hits hardest. Below is the method step by step — it works with any editor, and CamJam automates every step.
- Android 7.0+ (64-bit) and iPhone with iOS 17+ — the same features on both.
- App in English, Español, Català and Русский.

Step by step
- Choose the track first. Find its tempo (BPM) and the drop — the moment the music hits hardest. At 120 BPM one beat is 0.5 s, a bar of four is 2 s.
- Cut the music to 25–40 s. Start one or two bars before the drop and end on a phrase boundary, so the video opens with a build-up and peaks early.
- Write a shot list in beats. Opening 2 bars, then shots of one bar, two half-bar shots before the drop, the main shot exactly on the drop, a calmer two-bar breather, a finale.
- Vary the shot types. Detail → wide → camera move → close-up → action. Move the camera the same way in two shots in a row, and the motion continues across the cut.
- Film each shot longer. Add half a second before and after: the window is cut later, and a shaky start never makes it into the video.
- Cut exactly on beats, to the frame. At 30 fps a beat of 143 BPM is 12.6 frames — round cumulatively, not per shot, or the cuts drift off the beat by the tenth shot.
- Add transitions sparingly. Hard cuts on the beat, one smooth fade into the breather, a fade at the end.
The same, done for you
In CamJam a recipe is exactly this shot list: lengths in beats, shot types, transitions. The camera counts down each shot and records the extra half second, the edit is cut in the background, and the frame rounding is cumulative. You do step 1 (pick or import a track) and step 5 (film); the rest happens on its own.

Musicians, DJs, creators: import your track, CamJam finds the tempo, bars and the drop (where the music hits hardest) and writes a storyboard. Film it — every cut lands on the beat.

Questions and answers
How many shots should a 30-second Reel have?
12–16 is a good range: about 2 seconds each, faster around the drop, slower in the breather.
Should every cut be on the beat?
Most should — on beats or bar starts. Cuts on the half beat feel energetic; a few longer shots let the viewer breathe.
Vertical or horizontal?
9:16 vertical for Reels, TikTok and Shorts; 16:9 for regular YouTube.
